Standing Guard at the Clock Tower junction
Readtime: 0 min
A policeman on point duty at the junction of Barronstrand Street and The Quay in Waterford circa 1920s, with another officer stood at the corner.
Having been the city’s main thoroughfare since the 1700s, in early 1930, the Corporation decided to construct a new roadway surface there, as well as on adjacent streets, similar to that of the by now tarmacadamed Quays.
However, traders in the neighbourhood objected on the grounds that it would render it impossible for vehicular traffic, and also horses, in wet or frosty weather and thus take business away from Barronstrand Street.
