Awesome site: The Harp Stone at Glengoff
Readtime: 0 min
The Harp Stone at Whitfield, Butlerstown, standing at c.3.4 metres, is one of County Waterford’s most impressive yet least celebrated monoliths. It looked massive when we were small and, with its top-heavy appearance, remains a thing of wonder today.
You can read a good article here on the timeline and purpose of prehistoric landmarks, including “menhirs” (long stones) like the one at Whitfield, which were erected using a remarkable combination of human and animal strength, and probably elaborate early pulley systems.
It’s generally thought these neolithic sites (dating back to c. 6000-1500 B.C.) were meeting places with spiritual significance.
