How the Christmas Canals came to pass
Readtime: 0 min
Two women chatting on a bridge near Mount Congreve, c. 1899/1900.
There were a number of bridges constructed over the Christmas Canals, two man-made waterways either side of Dooneen Marsh intended to connect the Whitfield Court and Mount Congreve estates. They were fed by the Ballymoat stream (beginning at Ballyscanlan, Fenor), flowing through the large bogland before joining up with the River Suir.
Mr. Congreve took the photograph, so the ladies were almost certainly family members or friends.
