Utility vehicle bombing along the Quay in flood

Readtime: 1 min
The late Frank Muir

A pair of distinctive ESB Commer “FC” vans splashing past the ‘Munster Express’ offices on the Quay in Waterford City during the floods of late January 1973.

The British-made vehicles were popular for commercial and military purposes up until 1979. Several dairies, including Snowcream, used them as milk floats and they were a ubiquitous delivery van. However, Chrysler’s primary customers were public utility bodies.

While serving in the army in Iceland during WWII, English humourist Frank Muir, probably best known for his role in the TV word game Call My Bluff, did some work for forces radio and brilliantly reported a broken-down vehicle with the words: “The Commer has come to a full stop.” Genius.
